Asia's export-dependent economies have been given more time to negotiate but little relief as US President Donald Trump changed the deadline for his tariffs to August 1 and adjusted tariffs on countries such as Japan and South Korea. The extension keeps many countries in the focus of the US government's tariff crackdown, and complicates the negotiations by the possibility that the United States will impose separate sectoral tariffs on products from key industries such as automobiles, chips and pharmaceuticals, which are the economic pillars of many Asian countries.
James Halse, chief executive and chief information officer of Senjin Capital, said: "If these tariffs persist, they are likely to have a significant adverse impact on Japanese companies exporting to the US, especially automakers. Such negative effects are likely to be transmitted up the supply chain to Japanese suppliers that do not export to the US themselves but supply them. (Jin Ten)
