Morgan Stanley: Trump's tariff letter could mean a tactical escalation in trade talks

US trade talks are moving towards a tactical escalation, according to Morgan Stanley economists. The bank reported that if the latest tariffs proposed by the Trump administration in a letter to trading partners take effect, the weighted average tariff for Asia will rise to 27 per cent. However, Mr. Trump has said that the US is close to reaching a deal with India. Morgan Stanley said this suggests that most large Asian economies will be able to reach an agreement by the August 1 deadline. But Japan and South Korea may not be able to resolve key issues through negotiations. These include auto tariffs and agricultural products in Japan, as well as auto and steel tariff relief in South Korea, according to Morgan Stanley. (Jin Ten)
