On July 7, Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack on a ship crossing the Red Sea, their first attack on a merchant ship since December. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement on Monday that drones and missiles had been fired at the Magic Seas, owned by Greece's Stem Shipping. The Houthis later said the ship had sunk. The group said the ship had been targeted because it had docked at Israeli ports in the past. The Houthis began attacking merchant ships in late 2023, causing a sharp drop in the number of ships passing through the Suez Canal. In May, Trump said a ceasefire had been reached with the Houthis.
