According to crypto detective ZachXBT, the Brazilian central bank service provider C & M Software suffered a cyber attack and lost about $140 million, making it one of the worst cyber security incidents of the year. The attackers converted fiat currencies to Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT, and operated through Latin American over the counter platforms and exchanges, estimating that at least $3,000-40 million was converted into cryptocurrencies.
An investigation by Brazilian law enforcement found that the hackers paid just $2,760 to a C & M employee to obtain his corporate login credentials. The authorities are freezing the funds and tracking unflagged channels over the counter, but the incident has not been widely reported outside Brazil.
