On July 4th, Trump said that the United States could start sending letters to trading partners unilaterally setting tariff rates as early as Friday (local time 4), and July 9 is the deadline for negotiations. Trump said on Thursday local time: "We may start sending some letters, probably starting tomorrow, maybe 10 letters a day to different countries, informing them of the tariffs they need to pay to do trade with the United States." Trump said on Tuesday that he was not considering delaying next week's deadline. Asked if it was possible to extend the talks, US Treasury Secretary Vincent Bessant said earlier on Thursday that Trump would make a final decision.
