U.S. Treasury Secretary Vincent Bescent said Trump will decide whether to extend talks with trading partners beyond a July 9 deadline. "We're going to do what the president wants, and it's up to him to decide if they're negotiating in good faith," Bescent said Thursday when asked on the CNBC show if an extension of the deadline was possible. Bescent said he met with the European Union's trade representative Thursday morning and said U.S. Trade Representative Greer will be "working hard over the weekend" with European officials. Asked about the status of negotiations with Japan, Bescent said no agreement has been reached with Japan, possibly because Japanese domestic politics have complicated negotiations. Regarding Vietnam, Mr. Bessant said his understanding was that the deal was "done in principle," and that the 20 percent tariffs Mr. Trump announced were the centerpiece of the deal, which would not be superimposed on top of the general 10 percent tariffs.
