On June 30, US President Donald Trump said he did not think there was a need to extend the July 9 trade deadline, and that countries needed to reach an agreement with the United States before that deadline to avoid higher tariffs. < b > In an interview with Fox News, he said: "I don't think there is a need for an extension". Then he added: "I can also extend it, it's not a big deal." This comes after Trump said on Friday that the administration could "do whatever it wants" with the deadline, including extending or shortening it. On Friday, US Treasury Secretary Vincent Bescent said: "We have very good deals from countries, but it may not be possible to complete all negotiations until Trump's April 2 tariffs on specific countries are about to come back into effect. If we can do deals with 10 to 12 of our 18 important trading partners - and another 20 important trading relationships - then I think we can get all of our trade talks done by Labor Day [September 1].
