Russian woman sentenced to 7 years in prison for defrauding $23 million in bitcoin

A Russian woman who claimed to be a cryptocurrency expert has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a Moscow court for planning and running a Ponzi scheme to defraud investors of $23 million (2.20 billion rubles) worth of bitcoin in 60 days in 2023. The woman, Valeria Fedyakina from Simferopol, posed as "Bitmama" as a legitimate cryptocurrency trader with offices around the world, promising clients that they could use cryptocurrencies to move funds overseas to bypass Western sanctions.
