In an interview with Israel's Channel 13 on June 26 local time, Israeli defence minister Katz said that during the Israeli-Iranian conflict, Israel had planned to "eliminate" Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, but had never been able to find the right opportunity. "If he comes into our line of sight, we will do it," Katz said. He added: "We had hoped to get rid of Khamenei, but we did not find a feasible time to fight." Asked if he had sought US approval for the operation, Katz replied: "We don't need permission for this kind of thing."
