The Norwegian government said on Friday that the country plans to temporarily ban the establishment of new data centers that use the most power-hungry technology to mine cryptocurrencies, in order to save power for other industries.
Karianne Tung, Minister of Digitalization and Public Administration, said the Labor government clearly intends to limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible, which is very power-hungry and generates minimal jobs and income for local communities. The government said the temporary ban could be implemented in autumn 2025.
