Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, is facing legal action over its use of gas turbines at its "The Colossus" data center in Memphis. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), on behalf of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), sent xAI a 60-day notice of intent to sue, alleging violations of the Clean Air Act.
The SELC noted that xAI had installed and operated at least 35 gas turbines in the past year, but had not obtained the necessary pre-construction or operating air permits. The equipment could emit more than 2,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) per year, with serious impacts on local air quality.
