The South Korean Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security will begin discussions in early May to upgrade the virtual asset crime joint investigation team to an official department. The promotion is aimed at cementing the department's position as it currently operates as a temporary agency for the South Seoul District Attorney's Office and could be disbanded. Seji said the change is expected to improve efficiency through the appointment of new prosecutors and budget allocation.
The unit, composed of about 30 experts from seven financial and tax regulators, was established in July 2023 and is the first investigation agency in South Korea to focus on digital asset crimes.
