Israel has asked the United States to join military action against Iran, but the United States has not yet considered it

Israel has asked the US in the past 48 hours to join its military campaign against Iran to "dismantle Iran's nuclear programme", but the US has not yet considered that option. Israel lacks the bombs and large bombers needed to destroy Iran's vital nuclear facility, the Fordo nuclear facility, both of which the US has. But the Trump administration has so far distanced itself from Israel's actions and has argued that it is illegitimate for Iran to retaliate by striking US targets. US involvement in a direct attack on Iran, even if limited to bombing one site, would draw the US directly into the war.
