The European Parliament will vote in July on a technical sovereignty proposal submitted by the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE), led by pro-Bitcoin lawmaker Sarah Knafo.
The non-binding report, adopted by the ITRE on June 3, calls for a European digital ecosystem policy, noting that Europe lags behind the US and China in strategic areas such as cloud computing, cyber security, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and communications infrastructure. The proposal recommends removing barriers to private investment in innovation, promoting energy-efficient computing and blockchain infrastructure, and safeguarding digital financial privacy.
Previously, Knafo had publicly opposed the European Central Bank's digital euro plan and called for the establishment of a bitcoin strategic reserve.
