European Union and the United States are moving "in the right direction" in trade talks, European Commission Vice President Sefcovic said after a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Greer. "Our goal is to maintain this momentum," Sefcovic said. "I believe we can achieve positive results." He added, "But we are also ready to defend our interests and do our best to rebalance our trade relationship." When asked about Trump's recent increase in steel and aluminum tariffs, Sefcovic said it did not help the negotiations and urged the U.S. and European Union to work together to address overcapacity. The European Union Commission estimates that the tariffs imposed by Trump currently cover 380 billion euros ($433 billion), or about 70 percent of European Union exports to the United States.
