Texas Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) failed to properly disclose up to $500,000 in bitcoin purchases within the 45-day period required by federal law, OpenSecrets reported Monday, reigniting questions about transparency and conflicts of interest among lawmakers investing in cryptocurrencies.
Gill reported that he bought between $100,010 and $250,000 worth of Bitcoin on Jan. 29 and Feb. 27, respectively, but did not disclose the transactions until Monday, well beyond the deadline required by the STOCK Act. Decrypt has contacted Gill's office for comment.
The STOCK Act was passed in 2012 to curb insider trading and ensure accountability by requiring timely reporting of legislators' securities transactions, including those involving digital assets.
