According to Reuters, Coinbase became aware in January that employees of its outsourcer TaskUs in India had leaked customer data, in part related to a security incident in which the exchange had an estimated loss of $400 million.
More than 200 TaskUs employees have been fired after it emerged that a female employee used her phone to film computer screens and sold customer information to hackers with associates in exchange for bribes. Coinbase has cut ties with the employees involved and other overseas agents and tightened controls.
According to reports, the incident was reported to Coinbase in January, but the company did not realize the seriousness of the situation until it received the extortion in May.
