Riot Platforms (RIOT) has hired industry veteran Jonathan Gibbs as its chief data center officer, marking a strategic move by the bitcoin miner to expand beyond the cryptocurrency space into a broader data infrastructure business.
Jonathan Gibbs is tasked with launching Riot's new data center platform for companies that need a lot of computing power to support Cloud as a Service and artificial intelligence. The company plans to use its existing 1.7 gigawatts of power capacity to build non-bitcoin dedicated facilities.
Gibbs has over 15 years of experience, including designing and building over 1 gigawatt data centers in North America, Europe, and Asia. He most recently served as Executive Vice President of Prime Data Centers, where he led projects across the United States.
