Foreign media: Trump asks countries to make "best offers" by Wednesday

The Trump administration wants countries involved in high-level tariff talks to come up with their "best offers" for trade talks by Wednesday, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The move comes as the White House seeks to accelerate trade talks ahead of a July deadline. The documents show there is a sense of urgency within the administration to complete deals within tight deadlines. The US has so far reached only one deal with one major trading partner, the UK, despite repeated promises from officials such as White House economic adviser Hassett that multiple deals are close. Even so, the limited agreement is more of a framework for ongoing negotiations than a final agreement. The letter says the US wants countries to outline the best options in a number of key areas, including tariff and quota preferences for purchases of industrial and agricultural products and plans for non-tariff barriers. The letter also said the US would assess responses within days and propose a "range of possible solutions" that could include reciprocal tariff rates. It was not clear which countries the letter would be sent to, but it was aimed at those in active negotiations with countries including the European Union, Japan, Vietnam and India.
