US Trade Representative: "Section 301" can be expanded as needed
2025-05-30 12:27:43
Mr. Greer, the United States trade representative, said Section 301 tariffs could be expanded as needed. Section 301 refers to the entirety of Sections 1301-1310 of the Omnibus Trade and Competition Act of 1988, and its main meaning is to protect the rights of the United States in international trade and retaliate against other countries whose trade practices it deems "unreasonable" and "unfair." Under this provision, the United States can investigate the trade practices of other countries it deems "unfair" and can negotiate with the governments of the countries concerned. Finally, the president decides to take retaliatory measures such as raising tariffs, restricting imports, and suspending relevant agreements.
