US President Donald Trump is facing difficulties in convincing US consumers of the benefits of his trade war, according to a survey conducted by Harris. A majority of US adults (56 per cent) said their household finances would be better off if Trump's tariffs had not been implemented. Some 52 per cent of respondents said the promised benefits of imposing tariffs would not be enough to offset the economic costs they pay. The assessment comes after Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff plan became the biggest US trade protectionist move since the 1930s, pushing US levies on imports to their highest level in nearly a century. Financial marekts have been roiled in the wake of the tariffs, raising fresh fears that the US could fall into recession.
