John Woeltz, a 37-year-old American cryptocurrency investor, and a 24-year-old suspected female accomplice are accused of illegally detaining and torturing a 28-year-old Italian businessman in an upscale Manhattan apartment for more than two weeks in an attempt to obtain the passwords to his financial accounts. The victim arrived in New York on May 6, met with John Woeltz, who had done business with him, and was then robbed of his passport and subjected to electric shocks, drug coercion, and chain saw threats.
It is reported that the police found multiple photos of the victim being bound and tortured at the scene, as well as guns, chainsaws and other tools. The victim finally escaped and called the police on May 23. John Woeltz was charged with first-degree kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault and illegal possession of a weapon.
