Kristin Johnson, a Democratic member of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), announced that he will step down at the end of the year to complete his term.
After Christy Goldsmith Romero, Caroline Pham, and Summer Mersinger, this is the fourth and final member of the agency to announce his departure in recent days, heralding a major change in the CFTC's leadership.
Commissioner Johnson has been actively focusing on the crypto space, having advocated for the CFTC to develop asset custody regulations immediately, and has expressed concerns about DeFi and artificial intelligence, calling for digital asset rules to be developed through industry dialogue.
Existing vacancies on the CFTC require appointments by the president and confirmation by the Senate, and no more than three members of the same party. A confirmation hearing for chairperson-designate Brian Quintenz has not yet been scheduled.
