On May 16, according to the Financial Times, US President Donald Trump said during a meeting with business executives in the United Arab Emirates on Friday that the United States may unilaterally set new tariff rates on many trading partners, rather than reach an agreement with all trading partners. Washington will impose new tariffs "in the next two to three weeks". Trump added that Treasury Secretary Vicente and Commerce Secretary Luthnik will "send out letters basically telling people how much they need to pay to do business in the United States". Trump said that while there are "150 countries" who want to reach an agreement, it is "impossible to meet with all countries".
