Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, is set to go on trial on July 14, and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said on Thursday that it would not proceed with charges related to some "unlicensed money transfer business", but would still file charges for "money laundering", "partial unlicensed transfer" and "conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act". "While this is consistent with the April 2025 Department of Justice memo calling for an end to'prosecution for regulation 'and the cessation of prosecution for registration violations, it does not fully correct the Department of Justice's errors in this case," DeFi Education Fund said. Peter Van Valkenburgh, executive director of Coin Center, also expressed disappointment: "This criminal law provision has a vague relationship with the Bank Secrecy Act, and the principle of lenient interpretation should be invoked to rule in favor of the defendant."
