Since taking office on Jan. 20, Trump administration officials have announced more than 50 new or revised tariff policies, according to The Washington Post. Trump has signed more than a dozen tariff-related executive orders, about one a week - one on Mexican drugs and immigrants, another on Canada, and several modifying previously issued executive orders. Some of his plans are extremely short-lived: The president's six tariff announcements, such as those on dairy imports and trade with Colombia, lasted no more than a week, and in some cases less than a day, before being amended (the White House says that's because they had the intended effect). It's hard to say what exactly this policy turbulence has achieved. Irving, an economist at Dartmouth College who specializes in economic history, said the volatility reflected the difficulty of achieving goals in a very short period of time.
