According to Cointelegraph, Eric Council Jr., an accomplice in the US SEC's official X account hacking case, was exposed to illegally profiting $50,000 through SIM card exchange attacks. New evidence submitted by prosecutors on May 12 shows that Council provided SIM hijacking services with the Telegram account of "easymunny" between January and June 2024, charging $1200-1500 each time. He lured AT & T employees to transfer the victim's mobile phone number through fake identity documents and assisted his accomplices in controlling the SEC account to publish the news of the approval of a fake Bitcoin ETF on January 9, 2024.
Investigators found in Council's device that it had searched Google for "how to confirm if it is under FBI investigation" and "time required to delete Telegram account". Although its Telegram is set to automatically delete chat records for two weeks, it still retains conversations with overseas associates discussing SIM hijacking. Council was caught on surveillance during another SIM hijacking at an Apple store on June 18, 2024, and was subsequently arrested and pleaded guilty in February this year. Prosecutors recommended a two-year prison sentence, with a final sentence to be announced on May 16.
