On May 13, the Australian government appointed Andrew Charlton as Assistant Minister for Technology and Digital Economy, and also as Cabinet Secretary, to advance digital asset regulation and modernize the technology industry. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Charlton's economic credentials and international experience make him well-qualified for this dual role. The appointment comes as the Australian government strengthens digital asset regulation.
Under the new rules, major crypto platforms are required to obtain an Australian financial services license, while small businesses and non-financial services institutions are exempt. The reform package aims to align with international standards such as the European Union MiCA and Singapore's Payment Services Act. Caroline Bowle, CEO of BTC Markets, believes that the appointment reflects the government's emphasis on the development of the digital economy. As a former cyber security envoy, Charlton was involved in the development of the crypto platform licensing system. In addition, the government is consulting on the "debanking" of banks and plans to introduce relevant draft legislation within the year. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission will also update the digital asset guidance.
