Former UFC champion Conor McGregor recently floated plans to create a national bitcoin reserve during his presidential campaign in Ireland, claiming that the move would "put power back in the hands of the people". He said he would elaborate on the strategic vision at an upcoming X Spaces event and invited bitcoin community leaders to discuss the details, including Anthony Pompliano, host of The Pomp Podcast, and David Bailey, Trump's crypto adviser.
Mr. McGregor, who announced his candidacy as an independent in late March 2025 on anti-immigration and crime issues, could see Ireland join the US, El Salvador and Bhutan in setting up national bitcoin reserves.
However, McGregor has also been the subject of controversy over his recent conviction for civil sexual assault (which has been appealed) and his involvement in a hate speech investigation. In addition, the pre-sale of the REAL token project he backed failed, raising only $390,000, which is less than the minimum threshold of $1 million, and has fully refunded all investors.
