Wells Fargo: U.S. CPI rise likely to accelerate in April

Tariffs are prompting market institutions to brace themselves for higher inflation. Consumer price inflation is likely to accelerate in April, Wells Fargo economists wrote ahead of next week's U.S. CPI report. They expect the monthly CPI rate to rise 0.2 percent in April after a surprise 0.1 percent drop in March. That would bring the annual CPI rate to a four-year low of 2.3 percent, economists said. They expect the core CPI rate to remain unchanged at 2.8 percent. With tariffs already in place, they said, "we think it's only a matter of time before higher import costs impact consumer prices."
