The European Union plans to impose additional tariffs on about 100 billion euros ($113 billion) worth of U.S. goods if ongoing trade talks fail to produce results satisfactory to the European Union, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposed retaliatory measures will be shared with member states as early as Wednesday, with consultations lasting a month before finalizing the list, the people said. Earlier media reports said the European Union Commission is expected to share a document with the United States this week in an attempt to kick-start negotiations. The European Union's proposals are expected to include lowering trade and non-tariff barriers, as well as increasing investment in the United States. Talks between the European Union and the United States formally began last month but have made little progress and most of the U.S. tariffs are expected to remain in place. The European Union said Tuesday that Trump's ongoing trade investigation would increase the amount of goods facing tariffs in the European Union to 549 billion euros.
