On May 6th, Peruvian President Boruarte announced on the 5th that the Patas region where miners were killed in a mass murder incident in La Libertad province will implement a curfew from now on to deal with the increasingly rampant local criminal activities. According to the curfew, all mining activities in the Patas region will be suspended for 30 days. Boruarte also announced that the Peruvian armed forces will take over the mining area where the miners were killed. A few days ago, 13 miners were kidnapped and killed by armed criminal organizations in the Patas region. Local media reported that although the government had previously declared a state of emergency in the region and strengthened the deployment of police, it failed to effectively control the rampant illegal mining and organized crime activities in the region.
