Vitalik: Proposal to simplify Ethereum L1, with the goal of approaching Bitcoin in protocol simplicity within five years

According to Vitalik Buterin's blog post, it proposes to improve protocol resilience by simplifying the consensus layer and execution layer. On the consensus layer side, the new consensus layer design will adopt a 3-slot final deterministic mechanism, removing concepts such as independent time slots and epochs. On the execution layer side, Ethereum will consider replacing the existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with RISC-V or other simpler virtual machines. In addition, Ethereum will also uniformly use the same erasure code, serialization format, and tree structure to further simplify the protocol. Vitalik says these improvements will bring Ethereum's key consensus code complexity close to Bitcoin's.
