OP_CAT proposal to introduce smart contracts into Bitcoin receives BIP 347 number

A serious attempt to bring Ethereum-like smart contract functionality to Bitcoin, called OP_CAT, ended up with a "BIP number" 347. This is the first step in actually launching a long-proposed software upgrade. "Getting a BIP number doesn't mean there is any consensus in the community," said Ethan Heilman of Armin Sabouri, one of the proposal's co-authors, in an interview. "It just makes it easier to discuss and write software."
