Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (DePIN) is leveraging blockchain technology to enable users to take ownership of their data. Tokens incentivize users to use physical infrastructure and systems to provide services in the real world. A popular example of a DePIN project these days is Helium, a wireless Internet of Things (IoT) network. Helium is currently running on the Solana blockchain, and Sigel noted that the decision was made due to the high-performance nature of the network, which can handle high throughput and large developer ecosystems. In 2019, Helium launched a decentralized cellular network and rapidly expanded its global reach. According to Helium Explorer, there are currently 392,090 hotspots worldwide. Besides Helium, another DePIN project built on Solana and attracting interest is Hivemapper, which hopes to completely reshape the mapping industry. Founder and chief executive Ariel Seidman has been in the mapping industry for more than 20 years, says Gabe Nelson, head of operations and marketing at Hivemapper. During that time, one of the big problems Seidman wanted to solve was finding ways to create maps in a cost-effective and scalable way.
