Adi Shamir, co-inventor of the RSA cryptographic algorithm and a Turing Award winner, said at the RSA security conference in San Francisco that "the world would be better off without cryptocurrencies". He pointed out that despite the lofty ideals set forth in the Bitcoin white paper, cryptocurrencies are currently highly concentrated in a few large exchanges, mainly used for speculation rather than payment, and facilitate the spread of malicious software.
