The Karnataka High Court on April 29 ordered an immediate ban on Proton Mail, an encrypted mail service, citing a mandate under the country's Information Technology Act 2008. The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed in January by a New Delhi-based design firm alleging that its employees received offensive mail through the service. Proton Mail faced a proposed ban in March 2024 over "false bomb threats", but ultimately failed to implement it.
The ruling reflects tighter global regulation of encrypted messaging platforms after Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France over content moderation. Notably, Proton Mail's Swiss parent company provided user data to Spanish authorities in 2024, raising questions from privacy advocates about centralised services.
