California has surpassed Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy, the governor's office announced. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, California's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) reached $4.10 trillion, beating Japan's $4.02 trillion and ranking second only to the United States, China, and Germany. At the same time, California's economy has also grown faster than the world's top three economies; the California economy has continued to grow strongly over the past four years, with nominal GDP growing at an average annual rate of 7.5% from 2021 to 2024.
