California has surpassed Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy, the governor's office announced. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, California's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) reached $4.10 trillion, beating Japan's $4.02 trillion and ranking second only to the United States, China, and Germany.
