On April 23rd, according to Decrypt, the European Union Data Protection Board has approved draft rules governing how personal data is stored and shared on the blockchain. The European Union Data Protection Board (EDPB) said the new guidelines restrict access to stored information and comply with the protection provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The EDPB approved the rules this month and is open for public comment until June 9.
"Certain features of blockchain may present challenges in meeting GDPR requirements," the new guidance says. "The guidance highlights the need for data protection by design and default, as well as adequate organisational and technical measures." The document adds: "In general, personal data stored on a blockchain should be avoided if it conflicts with data protection principles."
