On April 22, according to the anti-tariff statement website, many well-known economists, including two Nobel laureates in economics, jointly issued a statement opposing the large-scale unilateral tariff measures implemented by the Trump administration through executive orders since taking office in 2025. The statement criticized the policy for repeating the protectionist mistakes of the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930, distorting the market, harming the interests of consumers, and violating the principles of free trade and constitutionalism. The statement called for a return to the founding values of "peace, commerce and honest friendship". At present, the "anti-tariff declaration" has been signed by more than 1,368 academic and policy people.
