On April 22nd, the United States announced new tariffs on imports of solar products from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. According to a decision published on Monday local time on the website of the US Department of Commerce, the agency calculated the anti-dumping duty on solar products from the four countries in South East Asia to be between 6.1% and 271.28%, depending on the company and the country. The countervailing duty is between 14.64% and 3403.96%. The four countries currently supply about 77% of the photovoltaic modules in the United States, and the total value of solar equipment exports to the United States last year reached $12.90 billion. The tariff decision is the culmination of a year-long trade investigation. The investigation was brought by domestic solar manufacturers in the United States and initiated by former President Biden. While domestic manufacturers see the move as a victory, the new tariffs are likely to add to cost pressures on an industry already facing policy shifts and economic headwinds. The Trump administration is trying to revive the fossil fuel industry and continues to cut support for green projects.
