Harvard University said it had filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, saying it had frozen billions of dollars in federal funding, violated the university's constitutional rights and unlawfully endangered its academic independence, according to the Wall Street Journal. "The consequences of government overreach will be severe and long-lasting," said Alan Garber, Harvard's president, in a community message announcing the lawsuit. Research at risk from funding cuts includes childhood cancers, infectious disease outbreaks and research to alleviate the suffering of soldiers wounded in combat, Garber said. Harvard argued in the lawsuit that the government cut off funding as "part of a pressure campaign" to force Harvard to "submit to government control over its academic programs". The legal showdown between America's most prominent university and the US president has begun. Trump has been waging an escalating campaign to revamp elite higher education.
