John F. Kennedy, a Republican senator from Louisiana and a member of the Senate banking committee, lashed out at US President Donald Trump's attacks on Federal Reserve Chairperson Jerome Powell on Sunday, saying no president has the power to fire the chairperson of the Federal Reserve, according to the Financial Times. "I don't think the president, any president, has the power to remove the chairperson of the Federal Reserve," Kennedy said on NBC. "I think the Fed should be independent." After Trump said he believed he had the right to fire Powell, he told reporters in the Oval Office last Thursday: "If I want him to go, he will go quickly, trust me." Kennedy on Sunday defended the Fed's focus on controlling inflation, saying: "My experience with Powell tells me that he is tiger blood. He will do what he thinks is right, he will not go down in history for allowing inflation to go as wild as the March hare, he will do what he thinks must be done." (Kim 10)
