Shigeru Ishiba, Japan's prime minister, said on Sunday that his country would emphasise "fairness" in any discussions with the US over currency issues. Some analysts have said Japan could use its holdings of more than $1 trillion in US Treasuries as a trade lever, although Katsunobu Kato this month ruled out using them as a bargaining chip. Asked whether Japan would mention its holdings in talks, Mr. Ishiba said: "This is based on trust between the two sides, global economic stability and the economic stability of both countries."
