The Wall Street Journal revealed that Trump has been privately discussing firing Federal Reserve Chairperson Jerome Powell for months, but he has yet to make a final decision on whether to oust Powell before his term ends next year, according to people familiar with the matter. At the meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump talked with former Fed governor Kevin Warsh about possibly firing Powell before his term ends and possibly choosing Warsh to replace him, the people said.
According to another person familiar with the matter, Warsh had advised against firing Powell and argued that the Fed chairperson should be allowed to complete his term undisturbed. But at a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump expressed confidence that he had the right to oust Powell. "If I wanted him to go, he would go quickly, trust me," Trump said. Trump also said he was not happy with Powell.
