The Trump administration is seeking to move California Governor Newsom's legal challenge to the U.S. tariff plan from federal court in San Francisco to the International Trade Court in New York. Attorneys for the Department of Justice filed a request Thursday to move the case off Newsom's turf, arguing that the trade court has "exclusive jurisdiction" over disputes related to tariffs. The Democratic governor of the most populous state is seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. On Wednesday, Newsom joined California Attorney General Rob Bonta in suing the president. They are trying to block Trump from using emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada and other countries.
Newsom and Bonta cited the harm to consumers and businesses in California, which could be considered the "world's fifth-largest economy" by economic aggregate, including agriculture and entertainment. Trump's tariffs face at least three other legal challenges, including two complaints filed by conservative legal advocacy groups representing small businesses and a third by members of Montana's Blackfoot Nation.
