On April 18th, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced measures to boost the domestic shipbuilding industry on the 17th local time. Some of the measures include that in order to encourage U.S.-built car carriers, after 180 days, foreign-built car carriers will be charged according to their capacity, starting at $150 per vehicle (CEU). In order to encourage U.S.-built LNG carriers, after 3 years, foreign vessels transporting LNG will face limited restrictions, which will be gradually increased over 22 years. No fees will be charged for dry bulk carriers arriving empty-loaded to prepare for export of U.S. cargo. All parties have until May 19 to submit feedback on the proposed measures.
