Mayer Mizrachi, the mayor of Panama City, announced on April 15 that the capital of Panama will accept cryptocurrency for payment of taxes and municipal fees, including bus tickets and permits, joining a growing number of jurisdictions around the world that have voted to accept such payments.
Mizrachi announced on the X platform that once the cryptocurrency-to-fiat payment track is established, Panama City will begin accepting bitcoin, ether, Circle's USDC, and Tether's USDT stablecoin as payment methods.
Mizrachi said previous governments had tried to push through similar legislation but had failed to break through rules requiring local governments to accept dollar-denominated funds.
