The United States has announced an investigation into the import of chips and electronic products

The Commerce Department is conducting a national security investigation into imports of semiconductor technology and related downstream products, according to a notice in the Federal Register posted online on Monday. The official document, which asked for public comment on the investigation, further confirmed that the chip and electronics supply chain would not be excluded from Trump's tariff plan, although he said on Friday that many of those products were exempt from "reciprocal tariffs." The Commerce Department will investigate "the feasibility of increasing domestic semiconductor capacity" to reduce reliance on imports and whether additional trade measures, including tariffs, are "necessary to protect national security." The scope of the investigation is broad, including chip components such as silicon wafers, chip manufacturing equipment, and "downstream products containing semiconductors." (Jin Ten)
