U.S. Commerce Secretary: U.S. tariff exemptions on electronics may only be temporary

Electronics products exempted from the tariffs, such as smartphones, laptops and wireless headphones, will be re-examined as part of the administration's investigation into the semiconductor industry, Commerce Secretary Lutnik said in an interview. The products could be included in the tariffs on the semiconductor industry, which could come in a month or two. Asked to clarify whether tariffs on iPhones would "resume in a month or so," Lutnik replied: "That's right. We need our drugs, semiconductors and electronics to be made in the United States." His comments will add to uncertainty among businesses about Trump's tariff moves, which have seen a series of reversals and led to a massive sell-off in the $29 trillion Treasury market last week. In addition, Lutnik also mentioned that tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry will be introduced within the next month or two.
